Meniscus Tear

The Meniscus is the tough fibrous cartilage that rests between the thigh bone and shin bone on the inner side of the knee. The primary function of this cartilage is to allow for even weight distribution throughout the knee. Unlike most muscle systems, there is a large portion of the meniscus that is not supplied blood. This lack of blood flow often results in minor injuries not being able to heal resulting in exacerbation when repeatedly strained.

This injury is prevalent among athletes but also affects non athletes as well. In athletes, it is most often a result of a traumatic injury or severe strain. For others, small microtraumas cause the cartilage to weaken over time until it becomes torn.

Signs and symptoms of a Medial Meniscus Tear can include:

  • Knee pain
  • Swelling of the knee
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Clicking or popping sound when the knee is in use
  • Limited range of motion in the joint
