Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis in the foot and the ankle is a condition that causes inflammation and irritation of the sesamoid bones. Sesamoid bones are pea-shaped bones that are within certain tendons. They’re typically located beneath the base of the big toe. Sesamoiditis typically develops due to overuse or repetitive stress on the sesamoid bones and the surrounding tendons.

Some causes of contributing factors of Sesamoiditis in the Foot and Ankle include:

  • High-Impact Activities: Activities that involve running, jumping, or other high-impact movements can place strain on the sesamoid bones.
  • Foot Structure: Having a high arch or even a structural abnormality in the foot can alter the distribution of weight & increase the pressure on the sesamoid bones.
  • Improper Footwear: Footwear with inadequate cushioning or poor arch support can exacerbate the stress on the sesamoid bones and cause further injury.
  • Repetitive Motion: Activities that involve repeated bending of the big toe, can contribute to irritation of the sesamoid bones.
  • Trauma: An intense injury, such as a direct impact to the foot, can cause inflammation in the sesamoid bones.

Treatment options of Sesamoiditis in the Foot and Ankle:

The treatment of sesamoiditis always varies on the individual, but will typically focus on reducing the inflammation, relieving the pain, & addressing the underlying causes. Here are some treatment options that may be explored:

  • Rest: Avoiding activities that worsen pain.
  • Ice: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and provide pain relief.
  • Footwear: Over-the-counter orthotic inserts or shoes with proper arch support and cushioning can alleviate pressure on the sesamoid bones.
  • Medications: Over the counter NSAIDs can help reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Physical Therapy: Engaging in exercises and stretches to help improve foot mechanics, strength, and flexibility.
