Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome is a condition characterized by the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle is a small muscle located in the buttocks, and when it tightens or spasms, it can put intense pressure on the sciatic nerve, leading to various signs and symptoms such as:

  • Pain in the Buttocks: Individuals with piriformis syndrome often experience pain in the buttocks, which may be deep and sharp.
  • Radiating Pain: The pain associated with piriformis syndrome can radiate down the back of the leg, following the path of the sciatic nerve. This pain may extend into the thigh and even reach the calf.
  • Difficulty Sitting: Sitting for prolonged periods can exacerbate symptoms. Individuals with piriformis syndrome may find it uncomfortable or painful to sit for extended periods.
  • Tingling and Numbness: Irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause tingling and numbness along the back of the leg. This sensation may extend from the buttocks to the foot.
  • Pain with Movement: Certain movements, such as walking, climbing stairs, or running, may trigger or worsen the pain associated with piriformis syndrome.
  • Increased Pain with Sitting or Standing: Some individuals may experience increased pain when sitting or standing for extended periods, as these positions can aggravate the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

It’s important to note that the symptoms of piriformis syndrome can vary from person to person, and other conditions can cause similar symptoms.
