Patellar/Quadriceps Tendon Repair

Patellar tendon repairs and quadriceps tendon repair are both procedures performed to address injuries that involve specific tendons around the knee joint. While they are somewhat similar, there are a couple of key differences such as: the location of the tendon injury as well as the specific tendon that needs to be repaired. Surgery is often needed to repair this, once confirmed by an orthopedic surgeon.

Patellar Tendon Repair:

  • Tendon Repaired: The patellar tendon allows us to extend as well as straighten our leg. This is a thick tendon that connects the patella to the tibia.
  • Injury Location: A tear in the patellar tendon typically appears below the patella, where the tendon connects to the kneecap.
  • Procedure: During the repair, the torn ends of the patellar tendon are reattached using sutures to secure the tendon in place.
  • Recovery: Immobilizing the affected leg, followed by a rehabilitation program to restore strength and mobility gradually.

Quadriceps Tendon Repair:

  • Tendon Repaired: The quadriceps tendon allows us to perform knee extensions. This tendon connects the quadricep muscles of the thigh to the patella.
  • Injury Location: A tear in the quadricep tendon occurs where the tendon attaches to the patella.
  • Procedure: During the repair procedure, the torn ends of the quadriceps tendon are reattached, using sutures, securing the tendon ends to the patella.
  • Recovery: Immobilizing the affected leg, followed by a rehabilitation program to restore strength and mobility gradually.

Both procedures involve reattaching the damaged tendon to its corresponding bone attachment, typically using sutures.
